This was the first university botanical garden in the world and it dates to 1545. It was created in an area previously belonging to a Benedictine monastery where medicinal herbs were already being cultivated. Its architectural plan testifies to the search for equilibrium and formal perfection of Humanistic culture. As an institute, the Garden carries out research, experimentation, teaching, conservation, and scientific dissemination, and it possesses plant collections of enormous scientific value. It is part of the famous University of Padua, founded in 1222.
